Thai basil has a bold, sweet, and slightly spicy flavour with prominent, herbaceous notes of liquorice, anise, and a hint of mint. Compared to the familiar Italian sweet basil, Thai basil has sturdier, more rigid leaves and a much more intense, aromatic profile. When eaten fresh it adds bright and peppery taste. When cooked, those liquorice undertones mellow out and blend seamlessly into savoury sauces. Perfect for Asian style stir-fries, broth-like soups and curries. It pairs well with chillies, fish sauce, garlic, aubergines, pork, chicken, and shrimp. Because of this unique flavour, it generally cannot be swapped with Italian sweet basil without altering the taste of the dish.
