Sutton Community Farm is officially certified as organic by OF&G Organic.

Farming organically builds on our mission to nurture the planet and nourish people through good food.

So, what does organic actually mean?

Farming organically means working with nature, not against it, to farm in a way that maintains or enhances the health of soil, plants, animals and people. At Sutton Community Farm, this is acheived through the following principles.

We nourish the soil and keep it alive, building fertility by using compost and clover which locks nitrogen into the soil.

Thanks to these methods, organic soils are around 25% more effective at storing carbon in the long-term

and are more resilient to the effects of climate change, helping to ensure food security for generations to come.

Despite their critical importance to our food system, we are losing insects 8x faster than mammals!

Organic farms support 50% more abundant plant, insect, and bird life, with 75% more wild bees compared to non-organic farms.

Earthworms, soil organisms, birds, bees, and butterflies are some of our heroes at SCF.

Organic farms don't often seem very ‘tidy'— you'll see fields with uneven clumps of grass, nettles growing, and corners where wild flowers are left to grow.

We also plant multiple species of green manures within our crop rotation, which builds in fertility and attracts insect pollinators.

By practicing crop rotation, we change what is planted in each field every year, which helps to prevent the soil losing nutrients.
